About Liu

Statistics compiled by the American Cancer Society show that one in seven women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. A researcher at the University of Oklahoma is developing digital and phase X-ray mammography techniques, for which patents are pending, that are expected to significantly improve early detection of the disease.

Hong Liu, Charles and Jean Smith Chair in Biomedical Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering, is an internationally recognized leader in X-ray mammography and other medical imaging systems that will lead to more timely detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast and other forms of cancer, as well as stroke, cardiac disease and other life-threatening conditions.

The goal of Liu’s phase X-ray imaging technology is to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce the number of the false positive and false negative cases, leading to more accurate diagnosis of breast cancer in the early stages.

Liu’s expertise in medical imaging technology is valuable to the planned comprehensive cancer research and treatment center at OU’s Health Sciences Center, which will provide thousands of Oklahomans diagnosed with various forms of the disease each year with immediate access to cancer care. Currently, the closest comparable facility is Houston’s M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
